On this trip we explore a wide range of habitats, starting from the Paramo landscape of the highlands, going down to the elfin forest and cloud forest as well as lowland forest.

Watch out for colorful tanagers, hummingbirds, and parrots or mammals like monkeys, capybaras, and tayras, enjoy the beauty of the scenery, learn about the indigenous uses of plants. This is a private tour and affords you the luxury of exploring the forest trails in the privacy of your own party, accompanied by your naturalist guide who will share his/her knowledge of the wildlife and different habitats experienced as well as the history and ethnology of the region.
Day 1
A journey through lonely highland scenery and isolated Quechua communities will take us to the pass of Acjanaco, the entry point of Manu National Park. From here we begin our descent into the cloud forest, enjoying the marvelous scenery and exotic flora on the way. We shall also stretch our legs several times and look out for exotic birds, butterflies, and insects. We reach our Lodge tugged away in the middle of the cloud forest in the afternoon. Full board.
Day 2
We rise before dawn and a short walk will take us to a nearby Lek where we can observe the male Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, the national bird of Peru, displaying for the females. We also look out for other birds like the torrent ducks, highland motmots, and quetzals. After a generous breakfast, we continue our journey down to the lowland forest, visiting a coca plantation on the way. In Atalaya, the first navigable port of the Upper Madre de Dios River a motorized dugout canoe will take us across the Alto Madre de Dios River to our Lodge, a former tea plantation transformed into a wildlife sanctuary. After lunch, we may enjoy the views from one of the observatory towers. Full board.
The gardens of the Lodge come alive with first light. You may see colorful parrots, macaws, araçaris, woodpeckers, tanagers, caciques, and oropendolas as well as hummingbirds. After an early breakfast, we shall start our explorations of the area with our guide. Different jungle trails, which are used exclusively by the guests of our Lodge, lead into the primary and secondary rainforest. The lowland jungle is the habitat of more than five hundred different species of birds, several species of monkeys, a lot of butterflies, amphibians, and reptiles. With a little luck, you may also observe black caimans at an oxbow lake nearby or perhaps even some capybaras, the largest rodents in the world! Full board.
Day 4
In the early morning, we will have a short boat ride in order to observe parrots at a clay lick nearby. This is an amazing birding spectacle! later we visit the nearby oxbow Lake of Machuwasi where we use a raft to appreciate sights of Hoatzins, Horned Screamers, and other birds. With a little luck, you may also see squirrel monkeys and brown capuchin monkeys and black caimans. In the afternoon we return to the Cloud Forest. After dinner, we may search the Lodge gardens for exotic insects and amphibians. Full board.
You may use the early morning to look for more wildlife. There is an orchid garden around the Lodge or you may watch over the San Pedro River and hope for torrent ducks to pass by or perhaps the rare sunbittern and watch flycatchers and white-capped dippers. We leave late morning for our return journey to Cusco. B & L
